What are fungal infections?

Onychomycosis, or toenail fungal infection, is a common type of infection that affects primarily the toenails but can also affect the skin. People with diabetes, circulatory diseases and immunodeficiency disorders are more prone to developing a fungal infection.

Toenail Fungus

Nail fungus thrives in warm and moist environments. As such, people who frequently wear closed-off shoes, sweat a lot, share towels, shoes or socks with someone infected, or walk barefoot in damp public places like swimming pools, showers, gyms and the like are at an increased risk of developing a fungal infection.

What to look for?

Fungal infections may display the following symptoms:

  • Thickened, discolored, or brittle toenails
  • White or yellow spots on the nail
  • Crumbly or ragged nail edges
  • Distorted nail shape
  • Nail separation from the nail bed
  • Foul odour coming from the affected nail
  • Itching or burning sensation around the toenail area

Advanced cases of toenail fungus can cause pain or discomfort when walking or wearing shoes. Additionally, the infected toenails may become too thick to trim at-home. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other nails and even your skin, leading to athlete’s foot.

Treatment

Here at Footopia, we use the ToeFX ClearToe Light treatment for nail fungus. It is a painless, non-invasive treatment that utilizes photodisinfection to treat the fungal infection.

A nurse will first perform thorough debridement of your toenails, then apply the ClearToe Serum on any affected nails and place them under the ClearToe Therapy Light.

When under the light, a photo-chemical reaction with the serum is triggered. This produces reactive oxygen, which breaks down the fungal cell membrane, effectively killing the fungi.

Toenails take time to grow: a full regrowth of a toenail can take anywhere between 12 to 18 months. As such, we recommend 8 to 12 treatments once every 2 weeks to observe new healthy growth of the toenail. Please keep in mind that additional treatments may be necessary for severe infections or if there are other underlying health issues.

If you suspect you have a toenail fungal infection, seek treatment from a healthcare professional promptly.
