Why diabetic foot care?

Given all the other considerations that come with managing diabetes, foot care may fall down the list of priorities. Those who struggle with limited mobility and impaired vision may find it particularly difficult to keep up with proper foot care.

Diabetic foot care is crucial for individuals with diabetes as they are more prone to developing foot ailments due to peripheral nerve damage, poor circulation and a reduced ability to heal wounds. Proper foot care can help prevent serious complications such as foot ulcers, infections, and even amputations.

Diabetic Foot Assessment

A diabetic foot assessment typically includes the following elements:

Neurological and vascular assessment:

This may include performing a monofilament test (60 seconds test), and assessing for signs of poor circulation such as cold feet or delayed capillary refill

Skin and nail assessment:

This may involve checking for calluses, corns, blisters, ulcers, cuts, bruises, ingrown toenails and any signs of infection

Foot structure assessment:

This may involve looking for deformities such as bunions or hammertoes, as well as checking for any areas of increased pressure or stress on the feet.

Footwear assessment:

This may involve evaluating the patient’s shoes for proper fit, support, and cushioning, as well as checking for signs of wear or damage that may be contributing to foot problems.

Education and self-care:

Providing education on proper foot care, including daily foot inspections and guidelines for when to seek medical attention.
